Remembering Bob McCord

In the heart of Calabasas, amidst the rolling hills and rustic charm of the Old Town district, there stands a testament to one man's indomitable spirit and unwavering determination. The Sagebrush Cantina, with its weathered facade and eclectic decor, is more than just a restaurant; it is a living monument to the legacy of its founder, Bob McCord.

He was a man who spoke his mind, unapologetically authentic till the very end.

Bob McCord's journey to entrepreneurship was anything but conventional. In 1974, following a tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of two colleagues, McCord found himself grappling with both physical injuries and shattered dreams. Yet, from the ashes of adversity, he gleaned the opportunity to forge a new path. Using the settlement money from the accident, McCord embarked on a daring venture, purchasing a small Mexican eatery that would soon become the Sagebrush Cantina.

With a modest setup of just four booths, three tables, and seven bar stools, the Cantina opened its doors, its floors lined with sawdust, reminiscent of a bygone era. McCord's background as a sound man on the iconic TV series "Death Valley Days" infused the establishment with a sense of nostalgia and showmanship.

Drawing inspiration from his experiences, he adorned the Cantina with an eclectic array of antique circus artifacts, including Ferris wheels, merry-go-rounds, and vintage band organs, transforming it into a whimsical and enchanting haven.

Despite its humble beginnings, the Cantina quickly captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike. McCord's larger-than-life personality and penchant for colorful language endeared him to all who crossed his path. He was a man who spoke his mind, unapologetically authentic till the very end.

But McCord's impact extended far beyond the walls of the Cantina. He became an integral part of the Calabasas community, pioneering the area and shaping its identity.

Through his dedication and hard work, he helped put Calabasas on the map, turning it into a destination in its own right. "Calabasas was a hole in the wall until Bob opened the Sagebrush in 1974," said Don Sanelli, a longtime friend. "Very little traffic was coming to this side of the freeway. When a lot of people started coming to sit out on the patio on warm nights, enjoying themselves, other restaurants and stores started opening in the area. He was the catalyst who created Calabasas."

McCord's entrepreneurial endeavors not only put Calabasas on the map but also served as a catalyst for growth and development in the area. The Cantina's patio dining, initially a serendipitous discovery, quickly became a beloved feature, drawing locals and tourists alike to savor its unique ambiance and delectable cuisine.

But McCord's impact extended far beyond the confines of the Cantina. He was known for his unwavering commitment to philanthropy, supporting numerous charitable causes both locally and abroad. His generosity touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on the community he loved.

Tragically, McCord's life was cut short by illness, leaving behind a void that could never be filled. Yet, his memory lives on within the walls of the Sagebrush Cantina and in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Bob McCord may have left this world, but his spirit remains eternally woven into the fabric of the Sagebrush Cantina and the community of Calabasas.

Cheers Bob.
